Peerless Rug Company is a third-generation, family-owned business that has been located in the Lakeview neighborhood of Chicago since it was founded in 1938. Milton Liss, a Polish immigrant who came to Chicago in 1920, chose Lincoln Avenue because, at that time, Lincoln-Belmont-Ashland was the second largest shopping area to downtown State Street.
Milton’s son, Philip, joined the business in 1958, after graduating from the University of Illinois. He began broadening the collection of flooring to designer carpets, ceramic and mosaic tile, and Oriental and contemporary rugs. Over several years, he explored Europe, Turkey, China, India, Pakistan, and Nepal to find high-quality weavers and other sources of products for the business. In his travels, he began to collect vintage carpet advertising posters from Europe.
Today, Peerless is passionate about quality, design, craftsmanship, and service, as well as inventive displays that serve the customers well.
The showroom has an unparalleled, distinctive selection of carpets and rugs, from classic Orientals to the latest fashionable design trends. The interconnecting areas display an unrivaled inventory of rugs in all sizes, designs, and colors . . . an array of carpeting for any taste and price, from wool and silk to sea grass and sisal to premium synthetics . . . an almost limitless variety of tiles and mosaics in glass, ceramic, porcelain, and stone . . . as well as cork, bamboo, and other sustainable flooring.
A workroom on the premises shapes and customizes carpets to individual specifications. Experienced installers working in customers’ homes excel in completing professional carpeting installations that include stairways of all types.
The Peerless commercial division, headed by partner, Hal Nagel, has formed relationships with builder and developers, architects and designers on projects that range from towering new high-rises, condo conversions, and award-winning corporate environments, to hotels and restaurants, schools, and medical centers.
Of special interest, you’ll find displayed throughout our showroom, the rare vintage posters that depict carpet makers and carpet sellers from the 1890s through the 1950s that were collected by Philip Liss on his rug-buying trips to the Middle and Far East and Europe. They form the largest collection of carpet poster art in the world.
